“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” (Isaiah 26:3)
Throughout our life development, we have learned to respond to stimuli based on feelings and emotions rather than reality. This internal alarm system was shaped by the environment we grew up in, the models we were shown, and our life experiences. We learn very early to make assumptions as a way to survive, rather than to check in with what is real or to verify. While the automatic response protects us from being hurt, the reality check may require time, effort, and energy, but can save us from overreacting. The former tends to induce anger, resentment, and frustration, while the latter will help us protect our peace, even more so for the believer who is encouraged to trust and keep our mind stayed on Jesus.
Charles Spurgeon writes, “O man, you cannot get your heart right, you cannot get your conscience right, you cannot get your understanding right, you cannot bring your various powers to their bearings and make them act in true harmony till first you are right with God.” Even if the world is at war, even if the bill collector is at our door, even when those we trust disappoint us, if we keep our minds stayed on Jesus, we will maintain that perfect peace so that we can think clearly and make better decisions.
He has gifted us peace on the cross; let us trust God and rest in it.
