Divine Protection

“He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.” (Psalms 91:11)

There was a debate between two believers. One stated, “Once saved, always saved,” in response to an admonition to stay focused on Jesus. Unfortunately, many of us believe that, now that we are saved, we have a right to do whatever we want and that we will be protected. Spurgeon mentions that the enemy left out the latter part of this verse, “He shall keep you in all your ways,” because it benefited the accuser to do so. We concur and add that this chapter begins with, “He that dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty,” and we, as believers, must keep this in mind. To enjoy divine protection, we must dwell in the secret place.

Spurgeon writes, “You know how, when the devil professed to quote this text to our Lord, he left out the latter part of it, ‘to keep thee in all thy ways,’ because it would not have suited his purpose to mention that proviso. We, however, will begin with the words which the devil omitted, since the very fact of his omission of them seems to show how essential they are to a right understanding of the meaning of the text. O Christian, if you keep to the King’s highway, you will be safe; but there are byways, and, alas! Crooked lanes, down which you must not go; if you do go there, you will go at your own hazard. He who travels on, the King’s highway is under the King’s protection; but he who takes to byroads must protect himself, and the probability is that he will meet with robbers who will make him rue the day that ever he turned to the right hand or to the left.
